It’s based on the idea that where you look affects how you feel. By focusing on specific eye positions, or “brainspots,” we can tap into the deeper parts of your brain where trauma and stress are stored—often beyond words.

 

You don’t need to retell every detail of your story; instead, we create space for your brain and body to do the work they already know how to do. It’s a bit like following your body’s internal GPS toward healing, at your own pace and in a way that feels safe and empowering.

What is the difference between Brainspotting and EMDR therapy? 

Brainspotting and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are both brain-based therapies that help people process and heal from trauma, but they work a little differently. EMDR uses structured sets of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you briefly recall distressing memories, helping the brain reprocess them and reduce their emotional charge.

 

Brainspotting, on the other hand, is more focused on where your eyes naturally land when you’re accessing a specific emotion or body sensation. It’s less structured and more intuitive—you stay with the experience at your own pace, allowing your body and nervous system to guide the healing process. Some people describe Brainspotting as a quieter, more inward experience that allows for deep emotional release without needing to talk through every detail.

What will a Brainspotting session look like?

In a Brainspotting session with us, you’ll come into a calm, supportive space where you don’t have to explain everything in words. Together, we’ll gently explore where your body is already holding the emotion or tension you want to release, without pressuring you to retell every detail of a story. 

Here’s what to expect:

  • Finding the “Brainspot”:  We’ll work together to identify an eye position, a “brainspot”, that corresponds with how you’re feeling physically or emotionally. 

  • Settling into Your Experience:  Once we find the spot, you’ll be invited to keep your gaze there while also tuning into your body. We’ll pause and hold space for whatever comes up, sensations, thoughts, feelings,  without the pressure to make sense of it all. 

  • Processing in Your Own Way:  As you settle into that experience, your brain and body do the work. Healing can unfold in images, shifts in body tension, or emotional release. You don’t need to “figure it all out”; healing happens through your body’s own wisdom.

  • You’re in the Driver’s Seat:  You remain in control the whole time. Your therapist is there to guide and support you, but the pace is yours. 

  • Closing and Integration:  Toward the end of the session, we’ll gently bring things back, checking in with how you feel and helping you integrate any shifts. There’s room to reflect, process, or just rest.

Brainspotting therapy, an alternative to EMDR therapy, that can help get you "unstuck" or help provide you with a unique perspective that traditional talk therapy isn't able to provide.
